Treating symptoms or causes?

When we are struggling with our health, it can be hard to see the bigger picture. We want the symptom dealt with NOW. I mean it’s uncomfortable when things are working inefficiently in our bodies.

For example, let's take a look at antidepressants. The data we have ends in 2018, however the amount of the U.S population taking antidepressants was 13.2%. I would guess that it’s increased a LOT over the last couple of years! The goal of antidepressants is to stop people feeling depressed. I have never taken them, but would also guess that they work fairly well. When taking the drug, no more depression. Problem solved… right?

Except, the depression isn’t caused by a lack of antidepressant medication in your system, so instead of solving the problem, they’ve hidden the warning system in the body that something isn’t right. It would be like seeing the check engine in your car come and instead of figuring out why, you cover it up with a piece of paper. Problem not solved.. But it’s covered up for now.

Whenever we choose to cover symptoms with some form of therapy or remedy, the dysfunction that caused the symptom isn’t resolved. We’ve just stopped it bothering us and inconveniencing our lives.

Instead might I suggest, looking for the root cause of why your symptom is there. Focusing on supporting your body and it’s natural ability to heal through nutrition, movement, clear neurology, clear mind, sleep, hydration, purpose, love, joy etc.

Chiropractic is one piece of this support system. By supporting your body's ability to adapt to life and allow the innate intelligence to work uninterrupted and efficiently, we see miracles happen, everyday. People who have insomnia start sleeping, people who are constipated start pooping, people who are always sick go months without catching even the smallest cold. They are more resilient, more adaptable, more connected because their nervous system is allowing their body to work as intended!

This isn’t to say we should never ever cover up a symptom again. There is a time and a place for medication, but what if we stopped starting there and instead gave our body some credit for the amazing being it is?

Peace, Love & Wellness,

Dr. Liz
