Food ingredients, specifically processed food ingredients, are one very important area of chemical stress. Processed food is made with preservatives, additives, sweeteners, emulsifiers, natural flavorings, color, seed oils, you name it. All of these chemicals are intended to make the food item taste good to use, but have a detrimental effect on your body. Quick rule of thumb for processed food - if you cannot pronounce the ingredients, don't eat it. Processed food is cheap, easy, and convenient, but in the short term. In the long run, a diet full of processed foods leads to metabolic problems, cardiovascular issues, digestive struggles, decreased immunity, and brain dysfunction. The chemicals in foods cause inflammation within your body and so repeatedly eating inflammatory foods causes longer term inflammation in body. This is what leads to dysfunction, like the health issues I listed before.
Of course everything in moderation, but if there is processed food at every meal of your day, consider where you could be making swaps. Are you buying packaged dinners? Are you eating cereal for breakfast? Do you eat processed snacks? Focus on eating veggies and protein at every meal, and eating fruit and nuts for snacks. High quality food matters for your health. Questions about nutrition or ways to make healthy swaps? Let us know! In health and wellness, Dr. Morgan
