Hillary Sargent of Two Poppies Apothecary sat down with Dr. Liz to talk about all things natural and nourishing for your immune system. Hillary is a holistic nutritionist and herbalist who curates her own products as well as provides whole health coaching. It was a pleasure to sit down with her (virtually) to share a focus on nutrition and herbal products to help our bodies through this unprecedented time.
You are intelligent. When I say this, I am referring to the innate intelligence that is in your body, and has been since Day 1. This is the intelligence that keeps your heart beating, your lungs breathing, your food digesting, your hair growing, your wounds healing, and so on. This intelligence gives you life.
Your body is self-healing. This is one of the main ideas within the philosophy of chiropractic. You have been incredibly designed by Nature and there are intricate processes in place within you to keep you alive and healthy. A fever, for example, is designed to raise your internal body temperature to kill off pathogens. A joint will swell to immobilize it while the body sends an increased amount of nutrients to heal the injury. When you are sick, you sleep, so that healing can take place while you’re resting and not expending energy elsewhere.
Your body is capable. You have the capabilities to defend and heal from foreign invaders. Being sick, while usually inconvenient and not ever fun, is not something to be feared. There is a reason you have an immune system. We come into contact with millions of bacteria, viruses, and fungi daily! And look at you, you are here and alive and thriving still, because of your body’s defenses.
You are strong. This is a tough time right now, as our lives as we knew it were upended a few weeks ago. There is a lot of fear, anxiety, and panic floating around right now. Know that you will be okay. It is absolutely human to have emotions about our current situation, but at the end of the day, we, the world, will be okay. We will get through this.
Trust in your body. Trust in your intelligence. Trust in your capabilities. Don't let fear get in the way of your trust in your health.

These are uncertain times. There is a lot of fear and unease circulating through our communities right now. Life as we know it has been turned upside down. We don’t know how long this is going to last, whether it is going to get better, or whether it is going to get worse first. It can be very easy to get caught up in the hysteria with all of the news media, social media, and our conversations talking about the coronavirus. I have caught myself starting to get my anxiety amped up as I scroll on my phone or talk with others. With this gray cloud of fear hanging over us, I urge you to more than ever seek joy in your life.
Seek gratitude. Seek the things that bring a smile to your face. Seek out the things that ground you. Hold on these literal and figurative anchors. Focus on the little things, focus on the big things.
Today, I watched the sunrise come up over the mountains and light up our valley with golden light. It was a beautiful sight to see and I was filled with such gratitude for this life. The birds outside of our apartment have been singing their hearts out, signaling that spring has arrived.
There have been news stories here Missoula sharing how small businesses, especially the restaurants, are able to stay open thanks to support from the community. Donations have been made to make sure that those experiencing food scarcity are able to get food.
This situation has brought out the best in humanity. Neighbors are taking care of each other, our world is becoming a cleaner place, heartwarming stories have been shared of families staying connected with their loved ones who are in quarantine, small businesses are being taken care of by their communities - there are so many good reasons to remain joyful during this time!
Life can be a dichotomy of good and bad, of dark and light, of joy and despair. We can’t have one without the other, so I urge you during this time of despair, intentionally find the joyful things in life.
Seek joy. BE joy.

About 100 years ago, the Spanish Flu pandemic swept across the world, causing a massive crisis. Approximately 50 million people died despite efforts of the medical community. This was in the pre-vaccine, pre-antibiotic era of medicine and conventional treatments struggled to help those infected. Interestingly, chiropractic care had a massive success rate with those infected by the flu. The statistics of those under care with a chiropractor versus a medical doctor are staggering: the death rate of medical treatments was 1:15 while the death rate of chiropractic care was 1:886!
This projected the chiropractic profession into being known as infectious disease doctors up until the 1950’s, when the profession began known as treatment for musculoskeletal conditions. However, the impacts of the chiropractic adjustment on the immune system have been documented: “promote the production of white blood cells, which are the mainstay of the immune system(8, 9), consistently reduce the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines(10), induce and enhance production of the immunoregulatory cytokine IL-2 and the production of immunoglobulins(11,12), and increase CD4 counts in HIV/AIDS patients(13).” (cited from: https://www.circleofdocs.com/how-to-avoid-the-flu-with-chiropractic-care/).
The adjustment is about so much more than back pain. It is about improving the function of every single organ system in your body by improving brain-body communication. This translates into a higher quality of life, meaning you can go about your day, your work, your hobbies without interference holding you back.
So, during this time of fear and uncertainty, as the coronavirus spreads, continue to take care of yourself. Get adjusted, because it impacts brain health and therefore immune health! Having a strong immune system is the way to sail through this time with ease, a sense of calm, and positive mindset.

There is a lot of fear and panic in the world right now, as our society faces the spread of the coronavirus. Why visit your chiropractor, during times when quarantines and social distancing are recommended for the health of the community as a whole? There are several reasons for this. Getting adjusted isn’t just about affecting the health of your spine, it is affecting the health of your nervous system. Your brain is the master control of every organ system in your body, including your immune system.
The interesting thing with fear is that it increases the cortisol, a stress hormone, in your body. When cortisol is released, your body is in a state of “fight or flight”. When you are in a state of stress like this, your body’s immune defenses are decreased. Your body is intelligent and will send energy and resources to the systems that require immediate attention, which during a case of stress like this, takes away energy and resources from the immune system. It can be really easy to get caught up in the hysteria surrounding this, but in doing so, you are actually working against yourself. Stay calm and be smart about your health.
I think we have a beautiful opportunity here to really assess how we are taking care of our bodies on a day to day basis. Why did it take a global pandemic to get us to wash our hands, get enough sleep, take care of ourselves and each other? Once this has passed, I hope you don’t fall back on your old habits, and that you have used this time to create new health habits for yourself.
Take care of yourself. Get adjusted. Get rest. Stay hydrated. Get outdoors. Increase your fruit and vegetable intake. Wash your hands. Seek out things that bring you joy. Decrease sugar and alcohol in your diet. Maintain a calm and upbeat attitude. Seek out other bodyworkers, like a massage therapist.

At some point in your life, you may have gone through your belongings and gotten rid of what you did not need anymore (hello, spring cleaning!). There are even various programs (think KonMari) that help you go through and purge your closets. Have you ever done a mental purge of your closet? And by closet, here I am referring to your mind. The vast majority of us have mental and emotional baggage due to our life experiences. How often do you sit with those bags and work through them? It can be scary to revisit past experiences, especially if they were traumatic or involved some kind of abuse. Think of how freeing it would be though, to rid yourself of that baggage. To live your life, without something holding you back. Moving beyond limitations that past experiences placed on you.
Mental health is just as critical for your overall being as physical health. Your brain is the hub of your mental activity. Keeping your mental health strong is keeping your brain strong.
I journal on a regular basis. This helps me work through the sticky points in my life and keeps me feeling on top of things instead of at the mercy of my emotions and thoughts. For me, journaling gives me clarity of mind. However, I am not saying journaling is for everyone. There are different ways to work through baggage. Therapy. Exercise. Meditation. A trusted confidant. And lots of patience.
It takes time to work through mental and emotional stuff. It won’t be a one-time session. A lot of us are working through limiting beliefs that we inherited from our parents and that we have lived with for years and years. Purge your mental closet and give yourself grace.
Take care of your mental health! Health is whole body wellness, physical, mental, and spiritual.

Traveling with a high energy toddler is no joke. Ian and I quickly realized why parents choose to take vacations with built in day care, such as cruises or big resorts. While I wouldn't change anything that we did, there were some definite lessons that we learned along the way that I wanted to share with you. I would love to hear any experiences you have had traveling with your kids, so we can all learn together and have the most successful trips going forward.
Happy March everyone! Can anyone else believe that spring is right around the corner?! I'm sure excited to have warmer weather coming soon! However, we're still experiencing the tail end of the winter season, and with that means still the constant presence of bacteria and viruses (although let's be honest, those are around us all year round).
Right now, there is a lot of talk around the coronavirus and its impending spread across our country. There is a lot of hysteria and panic surrounding this, thanks to the mainstream media. I know several blogs have already been written on maintaining your health during the winter season, but I just wanted to emphasize again that YOU can take charge of your health. YOU have influence over your immunity. Can we necessarily prevent ourselves from never getting sick? No, but you can surely take steps to decrease the length and severity of your illness.
1. Wash your hands. Wash your hands. Wash your hands. Have I emphasized that enough? Wash your hands. This will cut down on the transmission of bacteria and viruses, and dramatically decrease the chance that an illness spreads to you.
2. Vitamins A, C, and D are phenomenal when it comes to helping your body's immune system. Have a stock of these on hand for when you are sick, or proactively take them. I highly recommend taking Vit D no matter what, since we are likely to be deficient living here in Montana.
3. Sleep. Getting 8 hours of sleep is ideal. Your body heals when you rest and not getting enough sleep is a sure way to run down your body's defenses.
There are other ways to help your body's immune systems (check out previous blog posts for more details if you are curious), but these are three that will help you stay vital and healthy. Not to mention, they are pretty simple to do!
